Help for Anna University, Madras, IIT Madras and M.G.R. Medical University scholars, worked remotely.

Worked remotely from Nagercoil. Facts checked .

We help PhD and Master’s scholars in Chennai with thesis chapters, editing, statistics and format, all by phone and video from Nagercoil. There is no Chennai office for us, and nobody from our side comes to Guindy or Chepauk for meetings. Files come to us by WhatsApp or email, and we look at the drafts together on a screen share.

One rule surprises many scholars who come to Chennai from Kerala, Andhra or the north. Both the big state universities here want a Tamil abstract with the thesis. Anna University asks for a short one. The University of Madras asks for a long one, and an outside body has to vet it. In the other cities we work with, we have not seen anything like this.

Apart from the Tamil abstract, the two big universities work very differently. Anna University’s Centre for Research gives a fixed template and keeps its own list of journals. At the University of Madras only a few basics are fixed, and your RAC decides most of the rest. IIT Madras, the M.G.R. Medical University and SRMIST each follow their own process. We checked all the rules given here in the official documents in October 2026.

Universities in Chennai and what they ask for

  • Anna University, Centre for Research (CFR), Guindy

The R2025 regulations of Anna University have more detail than any other rulebook in Chennai. You print the thesis on A4, and after binding it is trimmed to 290 × 205 mm. Left margin is 35–40 mm. Body text goes in Times New Roman, 13 point, with 1.5 line spacing in between. Citations are in author–year form, and the abstract inside the thesis is an essay of four pages at most. In June 2022 a CFR circular fixed the main content between 100 and 400 pages, and references and appendices are not counted in that. Some theses were getting filled up with appendices, and those were being sent back.

  • University of Madras, Chepauk

The Research Regulations 2021, with the changes made in March 2023, apply to the departments and also to the many recognised colleges. Before the synopsis, one paper must be published in a journal indexed in Scopus, WoS, PubMed or SCI, or listed in UGC CARE. Please note that UGC stopped updating the CARE list in October 2024. Also, sub-clause 12.2.1 for science, humanities and social science names only Scopus, WoS, PubMed and SCI. For that reason an indexed journal is the safer option for you. Before the thesis you also need a seminar or conference presentation, as a paper or a poster. Your thesis is evaluated by your supervisor, one examiner from abroad and one from India.

  • IIT Madras

IIT Madras has its own thesis guidelines from January 2021. They ask for Times Roman 12, double spacing and 31.7 mm margins on the sides. The copy for examination is A4, but the library copy is A5, so check that your figures are still readable after shrinking. Turnitin is run on the full thesis, and after that check nothing can be changed. A 2022 circular brought in Track-1. Under Track-1, if 70% or more of the thesis is already published or accepted in good venues, two examiners read it instead of three.

  • Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Guindy

Doctors and health-science teachers register for their PhD here. Their PhD regulations want Vancouver style for the bibliography. Keep the whole text under 250 foolscap pages. The synopsis is 20–40 pages. You submit it three months before the thesis, and once it is in, the title cannot be changed later. Two papers in indexed journals are needed, and each paper has to mention that it is part of a PhD thesis of this university.

  • SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST)

The 2023 regulations of SRMIST want two papers where you are the first author, plus two presentations at conferences or seminars. All these have to be finished before the synopsis. Then comes a pre-Ph.D. talk in your department, and anyone can attend it. SRMIST checks the synopsis on its own software. Six hard copies are submitted along with a soft copy.

Tamil abstract at Anna University and at Madras

At Anna University the Tamil abstract is not a big job. In R2025, clause 17 wants roughly 400 words of abstract in English, and the same in Tamil. You submit one hard copy, and both versions are uploaded on the CFR website also.

The University of Madras is a different matter. Here the Tamil abstract can go up to 10 pages, and it comes before the contents page. It must also carry a certificate from the Tamil Virtual Academy. The Academy is at Kottur, Chennai 600 025, and they vet the Tamil abstract along with an index of key terms. Clauses 13.4 and 13.7 give this rule, based on a state government letter (reference 8093/K2/2022-1).

Many scholars are asking us how to plan for this. First finish the English abstract, because the Tamil abstract must say exactly the same thing. After that, make the key term list from your own chapters, so the Tamil words match what you really measured. The Academy also needs time for vetting. Ask your department how long it took for the last scholar. If Tamil is not your first language, fix the translator in the beginning of your final year itself. Please don’t keep it for the submission month.

Anna University counts only journals on the CFR list

Many Anna University scholars think any Scopus paper is enough. For the synopsis, it is not enough. Under clause 16.2 you need minimum one full-length article in a journal from the CFR list. Your name should come first in the author list, or second after your supervisor’s name. One granted utility patent can be used in place of the article. Design patents and short communications are not counted.

The paper should also be visible on journal website with its volume and issue (clauses 16.3 and 17.2). An acceptance email will not do. Some scholars publish two full-length articles early. For them clause 16.1 gives a relief, the synopsis can be filed even before the minimum period gets over.

Journals do get removed from the CFR list sometimes. Check the journal against the current list before you send the paper, and check once again before the synopsis meeting. Also ask your supervisor which list date your Doctoral Committee is following.

Clause 16.6 surprises most people. You have to bring a complete first draft of the thesis to the synopsis meeting. After synopsis approval the PDF upload comes first, then 90 days is the time given for the hard copy. Six months is the outer limit, and for that you pay late fee with the Director (Research) agreeing in advance. Up to five of your CFR list papers get bound into the thesis. Keep them in their own list, away from the reference list.

As per the CFR plagiarism policy, the check is done on your supervisor’s login. The check leaves out quotations, references, front matter and your own papers that are claimed in the thesis. The policy still mentions Urkund (Ouriginal), which is the older tool. Ask your supervisor which software actually opens in that login now.

At Madras the RAC decides your style

The University of Madras regulations say very little about layout. Clause 13.6 asks for 12 pt type, spacing of 1.5 or 2.0, no artistic fonts, printing on both sides of A4 executive bond, and a white soft binding. That is almost all. Margins, typeface and citation style are not fixed anywhere. Clause 13.5 leaves the presentation style to your supervisor along with your RAC.

This freedom can give you trouble later. When the style is not written down, each RAC member may ask for something different in each review, and you end up changing the format again and again. Write it down early. Agree the margins, font, citation style and chapter order with your supervisor. Show that in an RAC meeting and keep copy of the minutes.

The timing rules are more firm. The synopsis is 5,000 words maximum, and you present it before your RAC. One month after the synopsis you can submit the thesis, and the window closes at six months. You give four hard copies and one soft copy. One extension of six months is possible. After the six-year mark, though, nothing is accepted.

For similarity, the soft copy goes to the University Library, and the library issues the certificate. You will search the regulations for a percentage and find nothing, they just point to whatever rules the Syndicate has framed. Check the present limit with the library before you send your file for checking.

Doing a part-time PhD in Chennai with a job

Many scholars in Chennai are teaching in a self-financing college or working in IT, manufacturing or a government office. Both the big universities allow part-time registration. There are conditions about where you work, though.

At Madras, your workplace must be inside the area the university covers, its jurisdiction. Non-teaching staff need four years as regular employees of a registered firm. That firm must have a website and ten or more full-time staff. If you are from a corporate or IT-enabled services company, the employer letter has to come through proper channel with an e-sign (DSC). Some HR people simply mail a scan, and Madras will not take that. Your HR team may never have issued such a letter before, so talk to them early. Every year you also have to file an employment certificate.

Anna University has an external part-time route for staff of registered companies, national labs, R&D units, industries and government bodies. This route is only for organisations within Tamil Nadu. Faculty of self-financing colleges in Tamil Nadu can also register. Faculty from other states can register only if they teach in university departments, constituent colleges, or government and aided colleges.

At SRMIST, part-time external scholars come from organisations recognised as research centres. Any route you choose, the employer NOC still has to use the UGC 2022 wording. Get a copy of that format and give it to HR in the first meeting itself, otherwise they will draft their own letter and you will go back for one more round.

Working with us from Chennai

First give us a ring or send a WhatsApp. Let us know your university and your stage, like coursework, synopsis or final draft. If you are at Anna University, we will ask which of your papers are in the CFR list.

Then send us what you have written, with the basic informations like your department and your deadline. We will tell you honestly how much work it needs. If you decide to go ahead, we give a written plan with the chapters, the dates and the fee. Our comments come in your Word file itself, one chapter at a time. For Anna University scholars we use the CFR template from the first chapter, so there is no need to shift everything into it at the end. For Madras scholars we write your agreed style on one page, and you can show that sheet to your RAC.

We keep your English abstract final well before the Tamil abstract is due. For statistics we do a video call and go through every table and every test with you, till you can explain it to your Doctoral Committee.

The uploads, forms and signatures are done by you and your supervisor only. At Anna University even the similarity check runs on your supervisor’s login. There is no step there that we could do for you, and we don’t try to.

Questions from Chennai scholars

Can we meet in Chennai?

No, we don’t meet in Chennai. We work only from Nagercoil and we don’t hold meetings in any city. Phone, WhatsApp, email and video calls are enough for the full work, from the first chapter till viva practice.

Do I need a Tamil abstract if I’m from outside Tamil Nadu?

Yes. Anna University and the University of Madras both ask for it, and your home state makes no difference. At Madras the Tamil abstract also needs the Tamil Virtual Academy certificate, so plan the translation and the vetting well before submission.

My Scopus paper isn’t on the CFR list. Will Anna University accept it for the synopsis?

Not for the synopsis requirement in clause 16.2. That clause asks for a journal on the CFR list. The Scopus paper is still useful for your CV, but for the synopsis you need one more paper in a CFR journal. Take the journal name from the latest CFR list only. Some names look similar to each other, so if you are not sure, just ask your supervisor once.

Is there a fixed similarity limit at the University of Madras?

The regulations don’t fix one. The University Library gives the certificate under rules set by the Syndicate, and the Syndicate can change those rules. Ask the library for the present figure before you send the soft copy.

Can you help an M.G.R. Medical University scholar?

Yes, we help them also. We know the Vancouver style and the 250-page cap. As per the university’s plagiarism note, the limit for a PhD is 15%, and no continuous run of more than 10 words is allowed. The certificate is due 45–60 days before you submit. We work on the draft with you before that check happens.

I work in an IT company in Chennai. Can I register part-time at Madras?

It is possible, if your office is inside the university’s jurisdiction and you meet the service rules. Your company has to forward the letter through proper channel, signed with DSC. A normal email from HR is not taken.
